Q400 Airtanker Conversion
The Cascade-Built Q400-MR Airtanker is the most advanced
airtanker available to airtanker operators today - and is ideally
suited to the role because of its capacity, speed, performance and
safety.
Performance & Safety Through Advanced Technology
ENGINES
The Q400 Airtanker employs the world’s most
advanced turboprop engines - the Pratt & Whitney PW150A -
offering 50% greater fuel efficiency than older technology engines.
Their advanced technology also means greater aircraft performance
and less maintenance.
AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS
-
State-of-the-art Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS)
-
Engine and Systems Integrated Display (ESID)
-
Full Authority Digital Electronic Control (FADEC) for optimum
engine performance and power
-
Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS)
-
Traffic and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS II)
-
Auto-pilot and Flight Director with fully integrated Flight
Management System (FMS)
-
Heads Up Guidance System (optional)
RETARDANT DELIVERY SYSTEM
The Q400 Airtanker employs a computer-controlled system
that offers unlimited flow rate combinations selected by the flight
crew. Its 2,600 US gallon capacity provides flexibility in
retardant line lengths and coverage levels. Designed for
performance and delivering retardant, foam or water, the constant
flow system produces excellent drop results - including a
continuous and uniform drop pattern with no overlapping or
gaps.

Excellent Airtanker Performance
LOADS OF POWER
With its very powerful PW 150A engines - over 5,000 horsepower
each - the Q400 is a spectacular performer, making this aircraft an
ideal airtanker in any terrain. With its jet like cruise speed, it
is one of the fastest turboprop aircraft in he world. To the
airtanker operator, this means fire fighting excellence.
-
Quick response on initial dispatches and turn arounds (single
point refueling)
-
Cruising at 340 knots, it is very quick to the fire
-
Strong performance at the fire with its excellent
maneouverability, high rate of climb and turning performance
-
Excellent slow speed flight characteristics
GO ANYWHERE
-
Certified for use on unimproved (unpaved) airports
-
On-board APU - self sufficient for field operations
-
All weather capable for positioning flights
STRONG AND DEPENDABLE
With its rugged design and proven dependability in a
variety of operational environments, the Q400 makes an ideal
airtanker. Developed from Bombardier’s decades of
experience with the Q Series, the Q400 Airtanker is strong and
dependable.
-
Built in system redundancy for dispatch dependability
-
Centralized Maintenance and Diagnostic System to aid in quick
troubleshooting
-
A fully supportable, currently in-production aircraft
Operational Service Life
The airframe life of the Q400 Airtanker is qualified via
damage tolerance analysis which included flight loads monitoring.
As with all Cascade Aerospace airtanker certifications, the fatigue
impact of the special mission is qualified by data acquisition and
approved analysis methodologies compatible with OEM
Certification.
Multi Role Capabilities
The Cascade Aerospace Q400 Airtanker can be built solely
for aerial fire control or as a multi-role (Q400-MR) airtanker
where, in less than three hours, it reconfigures into the
passenger, cargo or aerial fire control role.
Designed for multi-purpose missions, the Cascade Q400-MR can be
used for any number of purposes, such as:
-
law enforcement
-
disaster response
-
military transport
-
executive or dignitary transport
-
transporting troops or special teams such as Search &
Rescue teams
-
cargo transport such as emergency or disaster relief equipment

Airworthiness Certification
The Q400-MR Airtanker is a civil-certified product that
meets FAR 25 Standards. Cascade’s conversion of the
Q400 to the passenger, cargo and airtanker role utilizes the same
contemporary certification standard as the basic Q400 plus
additional Transport Canada safety requirements for the fire
fighting role. This translates into certification standards that
are the highest in the world. The Canadian Supplement Type
Certificate (STC) offers ready portability to other foreign air
worthiness authorities, including the FAA and EASA.
Maximized Safety
The Q400’s power and excellence performance
capabilities ensure that safe performance is always achievable,
even in demanding conditions of high altitude and hot
temperatures.
UNPRECEDENTED TRAINING POSSIBILITIES
Another unique, key safety feature for Q400 Airtanker
operators is that Class D simulators are available throughout the
world for optimal pilot training. Unlike any other airtanker in
existence, all aircraft type training, including all emergency
procedures, can be conducted in the Q400 simulator.
OTHER SAFETY FEATURES
-
Fully air conditioned for pilot comfort and fatigue
minimization
-
Good visibility with wrap-around cockpit windows
-
EGPWS and TCAS adapted for visual firefighting operations
-
Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder
(FDR)
-
Weather radar
-
